Another happy customer

Fundraising and Grant Proposal Writing are skills that every non-profit professional could use. Our training courses really do work! Check out this unsolicited thank you letter we just received from a former student:

Dear David-

Hag Urim Sameach!

I want to thank you for the course I took with you last spring. Since beginning the course, I have sent in three grant proposals and two letters of inquiry. We just received word that one of the proposals I wrote at the beginning of the course last March has received funding. The course gave me skills and motivation to pursue grant seeking and fundraising more vigorously than in the past.

Your organization's homepage is like a retailer's display window

A non-profit organization can no longer function without a website. But is your website content as effective as it can be? Is it a tight, cohesive and inspiring narrative of what your organization is all about?

Our staff of professional copywriters can help polish your website, from proofreading and editing to a complete re-write. See what one satisfied customer had to say about our service:

Dave and Oz,

Thank you both for your insights, suggestions and expertise. The revised website material is now exciting, informative, with a strong focus on fundraising. I appreciate how quickly you completed the job and your flexible payment terms. Let us know if you want to add in the extra 1.5 hour.

When we met I was completely stuck and that's why I suggested working in a "hevruta" style - passing the work back and forth. It turned out that when you forwarded me your great work, and we decided it was complete, on second glance it prompted my eager input. I hope you weren't insulted that I contributed to it, and all the while I followed your pointers/analysis about the SEO keywords from your first email analysis. I am really pleased with the final narrative.

Thanks again for your professional service and I will forward you the link to the site when it's complete. Thanks, D'vora

Foundation search is a low cost alternative!

In recent weeks, several organizations have contracted with us to perform a foundation search. One such group was Lamitnadev of Beit Shemesh, an organization that strives to encourage and strengthen the value of volunteering and social involvement of the residents in their communities.

A foundation search is a low cost alternative to having us prepare a strategic plan or writing a full proposal. While in general we advise clients to work on a plan which will enable them to free themselves from foundation funding, there are situations in which organizations want specifically this data:

  • Often an NPO will have on staff someone whose responsibility includes fundraising. Therefore they have no need for an outside organization to write up a proposal or LOI. A foundation search gives them the data they need to develop new resources (apart from their existing donors).
  • Many organizations run on a shoe string budget. Whatever resources they have goes to programming. An organization like this can take the data that we provide, turn it over to a volunteer responsible for resource development, and have that person make applications to foundations.

When we perform a foundation search, we provide a great deal of data. You receive the names of all the pertinent foundations in order of priority, all their contact information, details of the projects they support, application guidelines, limitations and deadlines, trustees and key contacts. Where applicable we will also include our insider information about the foundations.

You can read here more about this service and how it can help your group in its effort to develop new resources.

Visit our website for information about all our services.

Chareidim, the Army, and the Job Market

There are two issues that have been "hot potatoes" in Israeli society for years, namely the participation of Chareidim in the Israel Defense Forces and in the job market. The Shachar Program is working to provide a solution to both of these issues in a way which benefits all sides involved. Shachar, which is run by one of our clients, the Aminadav National Service Organization and funded by the Joint and the IDF, provides a framework for Charedi men learning in yeshivot to join the army in a way which fits their way of life. These men serve in IDF support branches (for example computers or army intelligence), and receive professional training in various fields which enables them to join the work force. In fact, 90% find work in their fields within three months of finishing their tour of duty.

Recently, the Joint decided to triple their budget for this program. Take a look at this article for more information on Shachar and their expanded program. Congratulaitons to Shachar and a big yashar koach to all the men who participate in this program.

Micha Levinson

Back in 1971, I worked with Micha Levinson, designing a book of Israeli songs given out to El Al passengers. We parted ways and Micha went on to become one of Israel's leading figures in the theater world. Micha is now the head of Beit Zvi, the Israel's premier theater school. Now, nearly 40 years later, we may work together again to help Bet Zvi raise funds as it celebrates 50 years since its establishment.

Monthly Client Update: The Zalul Enivornmental Association

We are pleased to have the Zalul Environmental Association as one of the clients for whom we are seeking funding. Zalul is an Israeli environmental NGO founded in 1999 working to protect the seas and rivers of Israel through conservation, activism, research, awareness-raising and education. Zalul has initiated local and national campaigns that target unchallenged municipalities, corporations and the national government on their negligence and destruction of Israel’s most precious resource - water.

Most recently Zalul has been focusing its attention on a number of projects, including:

  • Pushing forward Best Available Technology (BAT) implementation policies in Israel's polluting factories.
  • Ending the discharge of effluent into the Mediterranean by the Unilever (Telma) production factory.
  • Fighting for the end of sewage discharge to the sea by multiple local authorities along the Mediterranean coastline.
  • Building partnerships with companies to promote our shared vision of clean seas and rivers.
  • Closely following the development of desalination facilities and demanding the use of BAT to ensure a minimal environmental impact.
Israel's seas and rivers have been marginalized for decades and it is up to us all to work to protect them from future damage and to rehabilitate them to their former splendor. Join Zalul on their website (www.zalul.org), on Facebook (www.facebook.com/zalulisrael), and on Twitter (www.twitter.com/zalul).

An Unpaid Internship that Paid Off - by Jessica Kirk-Bowman, Development Coordinator, HaMoked

When I decided to attend the Hebrew University for their MA program in Community Leadership and Philanthropy, it was part of my great plan to leave the United States and my medical research career behind and start a new life and career in Israeli nonprofits. While starting courses was straightforward, finding actual work experience proved to be much more challenging. Even finding a volunteer position that provided meaningful work and learning opportunities was not simple. Then this past spring, David-Maeir Epstein provided a few lectures to our class and announced that he’d was providing an internship in his office. I was excited about the chance to learn about fundraising and its myriad of details, and was hopeful that this internship experience would be valuable.

For several months this past spring, I worked twice a week in the office of David Maeir-Epstein, Resource Development for Nonprofits on Emek Rafaim in Jerusalem. There was always something for me to contribute to and learn about. During my work, I was given assignments that I taught me the ins and outs of fundraising, including writing letters of inquiry, foundation research, drafting proposals, submissions and working with foundations. In addition, the staff made me feel at home and I was able to learn from everyone. Interning has given me greater confidence in my knowledge and capabilities as a grant writer.

A few weeks ago I applied for a job as Development Coordinator for HaMoked, the The Center for the Defense of the Individual. I included the internship on my resume and gave David as a reference. I have no doubt that the internship played a most significant role my getting the job offer! I'm really excited about staying in Israel and in meeting the challenges of my new position. I'm grateful for the opportunity that I had as an intern, experiencing firsthand how the work is done on a day to day level at one of the leading resource development consulting firms in Israel.

Anyone interesting in interning should contact David Maeir-Epstein at dave@israelgrants.com.

We Need a Bi-lingual Secretary

The Katheryn Ames Foundation granted $12,000 to Hut Hameshulash for their project “A Warm Home for Girls”. Located Jerusalem, the home provides 12 girls, ages 17-22, some of whom are pregnant, with a period of up to a year in an extended family framework, counseling and vocational training and a chance to stabilize their lives and choose a positive path for the future. Success for the U.S. Agency for International Development!

I am very proud and pleased to have been informed yesterday that a grant proposal to the U.S. Agency for International Development that I helped write for a youth leadership coexistence proposal to be implemented in Israel's mixed cities was awarded $560,000! I can't yet share the details because there is a survey process that has to take place before the contract is signed, but I'm confident that the organization in question will be able to get through that last hurdle. This is the second highest grant that I've been involved in obtaining. Like the European Union grant process, USAID is a very complex application form with an equally complex system of assessment. Like most complex grant processes, this was a team effort with me playing a supporting role, including several instances of working through the night. Nevertheless, when successes like this occur there's a great deal of satisfaction and plenty of room for sharing the credit!

They receive counseling, vocational training, and a chance to stabilize their lives and choose a positive path for the future. I am very pleased to start my week with the happy news that the foundation has approved a $10,000 grant. Mazal Tov to Yigal Goldstein, the director, and Sivan, the project manager!

Some thoughts on hiring a resource development professional vs. an external consulting firm...

The following is David Maeir-Epstein's comment on Dr. Steve Donshik's article in e-Jewish Philanthropy which can be read here.

In my experience, Israeli nonprofits of various sizes eventually conclude that hiring an in-house professional to deal with resource development benefits their long term growth.

With this in mind, starting out with an external consulting firm has some definite advantages. For starters, it can help with developing the basic infrastructure needed (materials, elements of website relating to resource development, lists of relevant foundations, identification of potential donors, a work plan recommending which methods of fundraising will be most effective for the organization, etc). The consulting firm can also assist with educating the professional and lay leadership to recognize a high standard of professionalism in a field with which usually they are unfamiliar.

While I do offer assist my clients to find the right in-house professional from the beginning, I have also had numerous clients with whom I began as the external consultant and was able to smoothly transition by helping the organization to hire the right in house professional and providing the necessary initial guidance to make sure that she (thanks Steve for the gender default choice) gets off to a running start in the right direction.

Regarding the method of compensation issue, I’m surprised at Steve’s seemingly objective review of the issue in light of the profession’s very clear stance rejecting percentage based compensation as expressed in the Code of Ethics of both the US and the European professional fundraisers organizations. One of the first items on the agenda of the newly formed Israel Association of Professional Fundraisers’s First Annual Conference, now being planned, will be the adoption of our own Code of Ethics. I assume that it will have some elements that will differ from our US and European colleagues, but not on the issue of percentage based compensation.

From CEO: David Maeir Epstein:

A Win-Win Fundraising Opportunity!
I'm excited to announce that we have made an agreement with a new start up which can provide your organization with a no-cost method of generating income for your organization and strengthening your connections with your supporters and friends. Sounds far-fetched? Not at all.

"Comtribute" will help you to setup a search engine toolbar for your organization. You then encourage your supporters, friends, and employees to download the toolbar. That's it. You then receive payment anytime someone clicks on an advertisement after a search using the tool bar. As an added bonus, the tool bar enables you to send messages in real time to anyone who installed it. The toolbar includes your organization logo and website link.

Imagine that you want to tell your supporters about a new project, new grant, or new function. Using this toolbar you can do so, in real time.

This is being offered to a limited number of non-profit organizations in Israel. In order to take advantage of this opportunity, contact Shlomit Ben Michael (
shlomit@israelgrants.com) as soon as possible.

The Establishment of a New Old Profession in Israel

"You are doing something historic and very ambitious, no less than the establishment of the Profession of Resource Development in Israel." So opined Prof. Eliezer Jaffe in his moving summary of the day long discussions on the creation of the Israel Association of Professional Fundraisers.

Jaffe should know for he is one of those whose efforts beginning in the 1960's led to the establishment of the Social Work profession in Israel as we know it today.

Over the past 30 years there have been sporadic efforts to convene those involved in resource development for nonprofits in Israel, but now, for the first time, a formal organization has been registered, nearly 400 people have completed the initial survey and indicated willingness to join, and 55 traveled from all over the country to take part in the initial working session held last month at the Kibbutz Seminar Center in Tel Aviv.

As one of the founders and co-chair of the committee shaping the objectives and work plan for the IAPF, I am very optimistic. There is indeed a thirst and a need for such a development. The thirst is tangible among colleagues working in several thousand nonprofits in
Israel who feel the need for collegial support and guidance amidst the enormous pressures upon them to produce in a profession where the bottom line looms like an ever-present specter.

And there is a need for the nonprofits and the public to understand and trust that resource development is a profession, not a cold business, that must be approached with a set of principles based upon the highest ethical standards worthy of the dedicated efforts of hundreds of thousands of volunteers for the welfare, education, culture, health and human relations. We are not merely raising funds, we are building communities that strengthen
Israel's democratic and social foundations.

We face difficult issues when dealing with professional certification – What training should be minimally required for recognition? What experience should qualify in lieu of formal degrees? What ethical standards cross over all religious and ethnic traditions? What form of oversight and implementation can be instituted to ensure high professional standards?

The IAPF will play an important role in issues of employment, availability of professional resources, and identifying training needs not currently being met by the academic, nonprofit and private organizations offering continuing professional education. The Hebrew summary of the proceedings of the working session are available.

A large founding national conference is being planned for early 2011. A small group of activist colleagues have taken the imitative. It is now time for the senior members of our profession, the heads of development of our major institutions and larger consulting firms and our foundation funding colleagues to step forward and invest some of their resources and pro-bono time in helping the Israel Association of Professional Fundraisers, fulfill Prof. Jaffe's challenge and create a new profession in Israel.

I urge all resource development professionals in
Israel who have not yet done so to complete the survey and join the mailing list.

Monthly Client Spotlight: The Greek Orthodox Scouts of Jaffa

In the city of Jaffa, there is racial tension, poverty, high crime and drug use. Children see this reality on the streets everyday and wonder if that is their future too. The Greek Orthodox Scouts of Jaffa (OSJ) offers an alternative.

Created and run by volunteer professionals, since 1966, the OSJ has provided a safe, warm, exciting and varied social and educational framework. Addressing all the topics that face the children in Jaffa, the OSJ encourages communal responsibility, academic success, a healthy lifestyle, culture and coexistence. The couts consist of 185 boys and girls- Christians, Jews and Muslims- politics do not enter the clubhouse doors and all activities include learning about one another's beliefs and culture.

For the second year, the OSJ will be holding its Multi Culture for All Drama Day Camp. This highly subsidized camp will once again be the highlight of the summer for 150 children of all religions who will learn to express themselves with drama, movement, speech and this year- English. There will be programs on environmental consciousness, cooking, history as well as days and trips full of fun activities.

This incredible organization is run on a shoestring budget and makes a huge impact on the youth of Jaffa. Kol Hakavod to each of you and best of luck with this year's camp! It is our deep pleasure to work with such a dedicated staff and to have been able to secure funding for their programs from the Ames Family Foundation and the International Christian Embassy. To volunteer for, learn more about, or donate to the OSJ, contact Angela.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

The Jacob and Hilda Blaustein Foundation will be reviewing proposals in July. The goal of this foundation is to strengthen Israel as a democratic, equitable, and pluralistic society. There is a geographic focus on the Negev, a historically disadvantaged area of the country.

The Steinhardt Family Foundation giving for children-at-risk and new immigrants up to age 18 should be contacted with appropriate programs.
Contact us to learn how our knowledge and information can assist you in your resource development goals.

From CEO: David Maeir Epstein

I just returned from four weeks in the U.S. The second Seder reminded me of yet another reason why I made Aliyah! I was able to meet with the heads of several foundations, among them Adelson, Ames, and Fleischer, and succeeded in including several of my clients (The Orthodox Scouts of Jaffa, Hut Hameshulash and Yod Bet B'Cheshvan) in upcoming Israel site visits. One of my main work tasks together with its President, Prof. David Alexander, was the establishment of the Friends of the Neri Bloomfield School of Design in Haifa.

It is quite remarkable that from nearly 10,000 kilometers away, I still could work with email and LogMeIn to submit proposals for Pitchon Lev, one of our new clients, from my office computer to The Ministry of Absorption, Bituach Leumi and the Philadelphia Jewish Federation in time for their deadlines!

Another optimistic development was a site visit of an Israel foundation representative to a client in Jerusalem. The visit was so successful that the representative agreed to call her colleague at another foundation where a proposal for funding was pending and recommend positive consideration!

We are now planning a two-day intensive grantwriting and work with foundations workshop to be held May 30-31 at Machon Arava in Kibbutz Ketura. The workshop is open to the public and will cost 1000 NIS per participant. For details and registration please contact Sarit or Bruria - (a good opportunity to combine it with a weekend in Eilat?)

Also, I'm looking to add some bi-lingual freelancers to our external staff. Send your CV's to me at dave@israelgrants.com

Best wishes for a good summer!

Dave

What are you doing to make the giving spirit of Chanukah and the coming end of the tax year work for your fundraising efforts? Now is the perfect time to put into practice what you’ve pushed off until now. Yes, it’s late, but not too late. You can set up your own e-newsletter campaign in a few days and have your message out to your supporters before the end of Chanukah and the fiscal year for tax deductible donations. During this time of the year, people are looking for the best place to give their donation dollars to. Give them a reason and an easy way to choose you!

With user friendly online programs like constantcontact.com, you can upload the email addresses of your supporters and send them a short message. Update them on your activities and successes and ask them for help with an easy way to donate online with a few clicks.

Still not convinced? Consider this: People want to give to a worthy cause. Many organizations do utilize the e-newsletter to solicit funds, if you aren’t in their inbox, someone else will be. Read this for an excellent example of an effective campaign. Contact Shoshanna to discuss getting yourself online and into your donors’ inbox.

PayPal Can Now Link with Israeli Bank Accounts- Why this matters to you

PayPal is recognized world wide as a safe and secure way to purchase and donate online. Linked to one’s bank account or credit card, the user can, with a few clicks of the mouse, make purchases or donate to online fundraising campaigns. This makes buying or donating very easy for a PayPal user.

Until very recently, Israeli organizations had to have an American bank account to use PayPal for online donations, eliminating many smaller amutot from using the well known and trusted service. Now, with the ability to link an account with an Israeli bank account, there is NO excuse for not having a Donate Now button on your website homepage and enewsletters!

We can help you set up a PayPal account and get you started with easy online donations!

Set up your PayPal account for free and have an instant, secure way for your friends to support you. E-newsletters are an effective way to reach out to your donor base to inform them of what you’ve done, where you’re headed and how they can help.

We can help you set up your web based e-newsletter account as well as a PayPal account. We will work with you to create an attractive, compelling and effective e-newsletter and send it to your donors, volunteers and friends. You will be able to track who received your message, who opened it, clicked on your links, forwarded it to others and of course, who donated.
